Croatia Day 5: Klis Fortress – Ston – Trsteno Arboretum – Dubrovnik

The morning starts off with our final breakfast at our hotel in Split, before the group hops on the bus, and drive 45 minutes to Klis Fortress. The Klis Fortress is a medieval fortress situated above a village bearing the same name.

We hike our way up to the top where we get a GORGEOUS view of the surrounding area. We explore the GOT spots where they filmed the city of Meereen. After a very windy exploration, we hop back onto the bus and drive two scenic hours to the city Ston.

Ston was a small, municipal city just past Bosnia, but has a darling old town that we were able to spend an hour exploring and we sat down at a restaurant, Dardin, for a seafood lunch filled with seafood risotto, shrimp, and mussels.

We jump back on the bus and drive 30 minutes to to Trsteno Arboretum. Our Game of Thrones tour begins with our darling tour guide, Dubrovka, as she leads us through the lush botanical gardens.

There are beautiful fountains, vine-filled pergolas, bougainvillea bushes and pavilions as far as the eye can see. It was erected in the late 15th century by the Gozze family, who requested that ship captains bring back seeds and plants from their travels. It has been the property of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts since 1948.

It is mostly associated with the GOT scenes involving the powerful family from the Reach, the Tyrells which made it earn the famous nickname the “Tyrell (High)Garden”.

We also see where they film the sword fighting lesson between Bronn and Jamie Lanister.

We enjoy colorful mixed drinks and creative finger crackers as we sip our refreshing cocktails next to a 70-meter long aqueduct, that leads to a fountain with a pond. Thousands of orange and yellow goldfish swim among tadpoles and bullfrogs. We take more more photos before we board the bus once again 20 minutes to our final destination – Dubrovnik.

We check into the most gorgeous hotel – Grand Hotel Park, where we are in their four-star villas. Our room is incredible, complete with fountain courtyard view, sitting room, huge bathroom with towel warmer, and walk-out balcony. We all scamper around and pop our heads out off each balcony like the Brady bunch as we all are very thrilled with how awesome our last hotel rooms are.

Our usual group gathers again and walk to the beach about 3 minutes away for dinner at Restaurant Casa, right on the water. We watch the sun set as children play in the water, skip rocks, while parents lounge on the provided beach chairs. Dinner was a collection of shrimp soup, wild boar and gnocchi, seafood pasta, chicken and ribeye. We had a great time and after thoroughly confusing our waiter with the one check he gave us, we made our way back to the hotel bar for final drinks before going to bed.

The morning begins with our final adventure in the city of Debrovnik, or, for my Game of Thrones readers – Kings Landing.
